So many times, a patient will say I have TMJ. The reality is that we all have two TMJs. TMJ stands for Temporal Mandibular Joint. This is the hinge joint of the jaw just in front of the ear. Many times, pain may be experienced in this joint. This pain can be a function of disease within the joint itself, a result of how the teeth fit which in turn affect the position of this joint, or from the muscles that operate the jaw.
Because Dr. Fling has expertise with involved reconstruction, and because this reconstruction affects how the teeth fit, it is critical that he also understand how affecting the bite plays a role in joint and muscle symptoms. As a matter of fact, it is this very subject that Dr. Fling often teaches in many of his seminars.
When an initial examination is completed, an evaluation of these joints and their associated musculature will be evaluated. Many treatment modalities are available which may include
Home care instructions
Medications
Physical therapy
Splint therapy
Equilibration
Occlusal reconstruction
